UK catches up with Island

Water meterGovernment announced an independent review of water metering
- at least in the most drought-hit parts of England by 2030.

New legislation also aims to encourage gardens and driveways that allow water to drain into the soil. Hard surfaces that run water off into the drains and waste it, will need planning permission.

The measure is included in a document published recently by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), which sets out proposals aimed at improving water conservation and efficiency in England.

Defra wants us to limit…

Defra wants us to limit the use of appliances such as power showers, dishwashers and washing machines. Harvesting rainwater for domestic use through the use of water butts is also to be encouraged. They hope to reverse the trend of rising water use, to cut individual consumption by 10% if possible.

Climate Change

Drought and flood are both predicted to get worse by Climate Change theories. The distribution of water will change, and our current building styles will have to change.

DroughtMeanwhile, China has problems with the Yangtze river waters falling to their lowest levels since 1866, disrupting drinking supplies, stranding ships and posing a threat to some of the world’s most endangered species.

In Turkey last autumn, two major cities suffered water shortages after record low levels of snow and rain in the winter and searing summer temperatures. Reservoirs were less than 5% full in the capital, Ankara, water rationing started with two days on, two days off.

The California fires are the result of an increasingly severe drought now stretching over much of the south and west of the US. The severity of the regional drought, coupled with climate change, population and developmental pressures and the pipework for bringing water to the desert from the Rocky Mountains in the north over-stressed, could spell disaster.
